About us Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) are proud to be working in partnership with the Department of Health, UK Biocentre and the University of Glasgow to help with the fight against COVID-19. Under the partnership UK Lighthouse Labs, MDC are responsible for running and managing the laboratory at the impressive Alderley Park site in Cheshire, which is the UK’s largest single site life science campus. MDC are building capacity and processes to be able to analyse tens of thousands of COVID-19 swab samples from across the country. Working alongside some of the most highly skilled individuals in the scientific community, who are dedicating their time and expertise to ensure our lab is processing the samples as efficiently and effectively as possible. Unprecedented times calls for unprecedented measures and at MDC we are focused on building the best team possible to deliver the numbers and samples needed to significantly increase the testing capacity. Our aim is to help the community during this challenging time. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to join in the fight and national effort against this global pandemic. Join the team We are looking to build a team of over 500 Lab Scientists (LS1) alone at Alderley Park. Responsible for unpacking samples and processing through the lab assay workflow testing for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection that causes COVID-19. What experience do you need? Experience of performing biological assays in a scientific research or diagnostic laboratory is essential, in either a work or studying environment. Attention to detail and the ability to manage processes effectively and efficiently are also essential. Knowledge of working in a Class 2 containment, RTPCR and/or qPCR environment and experience operating liquid handling machines would be advantageous. Whether you are just finishing your A ‘Levels, finalising your PHD or have the appropriate lab experience and want to get involved in the national effort against COVID-19 we want to hear from you. Working hours To ensure we are processing as efficiently as possible, Lighthouse Labs Alderley Park is open 7 days a week with our team working on a schedule of 4 days on and 4 days off, covering the below shifts: 07:30 – 14:30 14:30 – 21:00 21:00 – 03:30 We are looking for individuals who can potentially work across any of these shift patterns, however, we are aware that people may have personal commitments and cannot commit to certain hours. During your application, you will have the opportunity to state which shifts you are potentially available for. Alderley Park Alderley Park is the perfect location for one of Lighthouse Labs testing sites as it is the best invested life science R&D facility in the UK; and provides companies with a range of bioscience capability that are second to none. Located in Cheshire and within easy reach of the M6 and M56 and only 20 minutes from Manchester city centre. Local train stations (Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Macclesfield) are all within 15 minutes’ drive, with a shuttle bus going from the stations to site.
