Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) are proud to be working in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care, UK Biocentre and the University of Glasgow to help with the fight against COVID-19. Under the partnership UK Lighthouse Labs, MDC are responsible for running and managing the laboratory at the impressive Alderley Park site in Cheshire, which is the UK’s largest life science campus.
MDC are building capacity and processes to be able to analyse tens of thousands of COVID-19 swab samples from across the country. Working alongside some of the most highly skilled individuals in the scientific community, who are dedicating their time and expertise to ensure our lab is processing the samples as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Join the team
We are looking to build a team of Lab Technicians at Alderley Park. Responsible unpacking of samples upon arrival using a range of unpacking tools, as well as completing a range of visual quality control checks.
What experience do you need?
• GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English Language (Grades A-C)
• Good numeric and organisational skills
• Good interpersonal and team working skills
• Good time keeping skills
• Computer literate
• The ability to communicate clearly and follow instructions
• Previous experience in a manufacturing / production environment, whilst not essential, may prove advantageous.
Working hours
We currently have opportunities for both day shifts and night shifts.
Please note that day shifts run on a rota basis consisting of 4 days on and 4 days off.
Day Shifts: 6am to 3pm, 3pm to midnight - rotating between AM and PM
Based on an average 35-hour week
Night Shift: Midnight to 6am
Based on an average 24.5-hour week

Alderley Park is the perfect location for one of Lighthouse Labs testing sites as it is the best invested life science R&D facility in the UK and provides companies with a range of bioscience capability that are second to none.
Located in Cheshire, it’s within easy reach of the M6 & M56 and only 20 minutes from Manchester city centre by car. Local train stations (Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Macclesfield) are all within 15 minutes’ drive, with a shuttle bus going from the stations to site.

Sample Handling Technician
Working in partnership to support the fight against COVID-19
Main duties and responsibilities:
- The unpacking of samples upon arrival using a range of unpacking tools
- Completing a range of visual quality control checks
- Scanning the samples onto our laboratory software to confirm receipt.
As part of this role you will be required to wear extensive personal protective equipment including lab coats, face mask and shoe covers.

- Good time keeping skills
- Computer literate
Full training will be provided. Opportunities for progression exist for those who show potential.

Working hours
To ensure we are processing the level of samples needed to support this pandemic, Lighthouse Labs Alderley Park is open 7 days a week with our team working 4 days on and 4 days off, including weekends. The working hours are 6am-3pm and 3pm-12am on a rota basis. We also have opportunities for night shifts, the working hours for night shifts are 12am-6am, 4 days on, 4 days off, this includes some weekend work.
Please note that due to the working hours, we are only able to accept applications from candidates with a full UK licence and own transport. We are also looking for candidates who are available to start immediately.
